Christian Sacrifice.
– The Judaeo-Christian Background Before Origen. (The Catholic University of America studies in Christian antiquity, nr. 18)

This is the first major study of the origins of the Christian doctrine of sacrifice as seen from the background of its own historical and biblical roots rather that from the polemical exigencies of post-Reformation theology.

In Part I, “Sacrifice in the Old Testament,” the author examines pertinent texts in the light of modern traditio-historical analysis and studies the theology implicit in OT sacrifice under its two main types: 1) the burnt offering, and 2) sacrificial blood and sacrifices of atonement.

Part II, “From the Old Testament to the New,” contains an analysis of the sacrificial ideas of the late OT era as found in the Septuagint, the pseudepigrapha, Qumran, the Akedah (sacrifice of Isaac), the understanding of circumcision, and the Passover. This analysis provides the proximate background for uncovering within the NT itself, especially in Paul, the foundations of a Christian theology of sacrifice with a threefold division: 1) Christians as the new temple, 2) the sacrifice of Christ, and 3) the sacrifice of Christians (which turns out to be primarily ethical and practical rather than cultic or liturgical).

In Part III, “The Early Christian Literature before Origin,” this threefold division is used as the basis of a study of the Christian idea of sacrifice up to the beginning of the third century in the light of its own background rather than of later theological developments.

In an appendix, “The Eucharist as Sacrifice,” the author finds that the spiritualized, ethical idea of Christian sacrifice uncovered in this study was also apparently the dominant concept of sacrifice among the New Testament authors and other early Christian writers who described the Eucharist in sacrificial language and imagery.
